Created with circularity at its core, the Plan Collection by Barber Osgerby for Fredericia was first launched in 2022 and has now been expanded with three new additions.
With a heritage of over 100 years, family-owned Danish furniture manufacturer Fredericia has become renowned for its design-led craftsmanship and its collaborations with internationally acclaimed designers. Now also a B-Corp certified corporation, the company continues to approach each project with a conscious creativity, underpinned by values of responsibility and longevity. The Plan Collection, conceived by British design duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby and released in 2022, pays testament to the manufacturer’s design ethos. Following the success of its initial launch, the studio has now added three further designs to the collection.
Designed with a multi-functional purpose, the series can be added to a wide array of interiors from residential, to hospitality and workplace settings. The initial launch included a modular table system for conference rooms or canteens, an extendable dining table and a customisable dining chair with a variety of finish and upholstery options. This month, the brand has announced the addition of a barstool, also customisable, the Column Table and High Table.
Mirroring the sleek and minimal Scandinavian aesthetic of the initial collection, these three new designs focus on bringing a refined elegance to homes, hotels, workspaces, or restaurants. The black or brushed steel frame is now also available in a Bordeaux and Modernist Green finish, bringing a fresh, contemporary edge to the designs. The Barstool comes with a veneered bent plywood seat with the option to add upholstery to both seat and back panels. The tables also have a choice of surface materials to choose from including solid oak and Carrera marble. Through the collection’s simple, yet sophisticated, silhouettes, the beauty of its natural materials are given space to stand out, resulting in timeless and classic designs which transcend fleeting fads or trends.
Alongside its timeless charm, the Plan Collection is designed with a circular economy in mind. The chairs and tables can be easily disassembled after use and upholstery can be changed effortlessly if repair or renewal is required. Without the use of glue, the fabric can be removed without damage, therefore increasing its lifespan as well as allowing each component to be easily recycled. Successfully undergoing L2 and BIFMA strength tests, as well as being awarded the EU Eco Label certification, quality and sustainability have gone hand-in-hand in its creation.
Thanks to the brilliant creativity of Barber Osgerby, coupled with the standards of quality from Fredericia, this collection is a wonderful example of how collaboration can be a powerful tool in achieving sustainable solutions. Through prioritising the right values at the outset of every project, it proves that sustainability can be an inherent principle which governs every design decision. And, without any compromise on aesthetic or quality.
