This year’s New London Architecture awards once again celebrated the best architecture and design in London, picking from an impressive shortlist of 136 projects.
26 category winners were honoured across all sectors of London’s built environment with each scheme selected by a prestigious international jury advised by London-based experts.
Winning projects were chosen for their high design quality and the positive social and economic impact they have made on the capital.
Battersea Power Station, Phase 2, will be completed in 2019 but Wilkinson Eyre Architects’ design has already wowed the industry, taking home the Office Building Award for best unbuilt project.
Wilkinson Eyre was appointed in 2013 for the refurbishment of the iconic Grade II listed Battersea Power Station. The 102,000sq m office space is set around a central glass atrium, providing an industrial but modern workplace.
Built winner for Office Building was Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners for The Leadenhall Building.
The 47-storey tower has provided 70,000 square metres of office space and seven-storeys of public space at ground level, offering a half-acre extension to St Mary’s Square. Its tapered profile respects sightlines to St Paul’s cathedral.
The Office Building award was also presented to Urban Space Management for the Roundhouse Administration Building. With a client that required additional space but on a limited budget, this new block was constructed from recycled shipping containers, costing half the price and taking two thirds less time than a conventionally built office building.
The Office Building commendation went to Allies and Morrison for Thornsett Road. The development has replaced an existing industrial building and retained and refurbished a stand-alone pavilion located adjacent to the River Wandle.
The Office Interiors award went to our July cover stars Phil Coffey and Ab Rogers for the U+I offices (read full article). This workspace displays a rich history of historic changes whilst enjoying contemporary elements such as a floating boardroom and central stair that creates layered movement.
Commendations for Office Interiors went to Camden Collective by Sheppard Robson Architects and MS Amlin by tp bennett.
All of the winning and shortlisted projects will be on show in a free exhibition from 11 July – 5 October in the NLA galleries in The Building Centre, WC1.
